In what will be remembered as a watershed moment in cricketing history, South Africa clinched their maiden ICC World Test Championship title with a thrilling five-wicket victory over Australia at Lord’s. The win ends years of heartbreak for a side long dubbed "the nearly men" of Test cricket.
Batting fourth on a nervy final day, Aiden Markram’s sublime century (136 off 212 balls) guided the Proteas home after an early wobble. Supported by Temba Bavuma and Kyle Verreynne, South Africa chased down 287, defying both pressure and pedigree.
“Winning at Lord’s is every cricketer’s dream, and doing it in a final makes it even more special,” said captain Dean Elgar, who announced his retirement minutes after the win.
The final also marked the end of Josh Hazlewood’s unbeaten record in ICC finals, while Kagiso Rabada, with nine wickets in the match, earned Player of the Series honors.
